Description

Presented are the remnants of James Downey’s wonderful baseball collection – the schedules, scrapbooks, postcards and guides. The prominent pieces are a 1899 Spalding Guide to Baseball, 1903 Eastern league schedule and four baseball player portrait postcards. The Spalding Guide is in FR-GD condition as the cover is tattered and the back cover is missing. The pages within are still nice and the many team photos and statistics are sharp – including a team photo featuring the rookie, Honus Wagner. There is a pocket-sized 1903 Eastern League schedule once belonging to and notated by Downey, a 1920s Spalding Official Scorebook partially used to score local games and three scrapbooks with newspaper clippings of both Major and Minor League games between 1897-1901. The photographs include two oval portraits, one of major leaguer, Jimmy Bannon, in his Toronto Maple Leafs uniform and the other of an unidentified Rochester player. Three of the four postcards are real photo cards, two with single unidentified players and one of the 1907 Scranton baseball team with the fourth featuring a drawing of Braves Field in Boston circa 1920. The postcards and photographs are in good to very good condition. Once again, this is a tremendous walk down the historic lane that is American Baseball.
